Denpasar, (20/9) – PT SUCOFINDO (PERSERO) is encouraging the strengthening of innovations that can deliver a broader impact on business sustainability and community resilience through the 2026 Environmental and Social Innovation Awards (ENSIA) (10/9). Two strategic issues of primary focus during this year's ENSIA event are the development of the carbon market and the strengthening of food supply chain resilience.

Carrying the theme “Innovation for Sustainable Business and Resilient Community”, ENSIA 2026 serves not only as a platform to appreciate innovation, but also as a space for knowledge exchange and perspectives to encourage the implementation of innovations in addressing economic, environmental, and social challenges.

Senior Researcher at the Korea Research Institute on Climate Change (KRIC), Bonn Choi, stated that the implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement opens up opportunities for the development of carbon market mechanisms as one of the effective instruments for emission reduction.

In his presentation titled “Operationalizing Article 6 of the Paris Agreement: Carbon Market Mechanisms and Lessons from Northeast Asia for ASEAN’s Sustainable Business Transitions”, Bonn explained that investment in innovative technology and low-emission facilities can generate economically valuable greenhouse gas emission reductions through carbon market mechanisms in accordance with applicable regulations.

"Emission reductions can provide two main benefits, namely supporting the achievement of Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets while simultaneously opening up new revenue opportunities through carbon trading transactions," said Bonn.

According to him, Indonesia holds great potential in developing emission reduction projects across various sectors—ranging from energy, household energy efficiency, waste management, sustainable agriculture, forestry, to Carbon Capture and Storage/Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCS/CCUS) technologies. Therefore, the acceleration of the carbon market needs to be supported by the identification of priority sectors, regulatory strengthening, and the integration of various emission reduction sources into the Emissions Trading System (ETS).

"By identifying priority sectors, Indonesia can direct carbon investments in a measurable way toward projects that generate real environmental impacts, tangible economic benefits, and greater development contributions," he explained.

In addition to the carbon market, ENSIA 2026 draws attention to food supply chain resilience as the foundation of national resilience. The Assistant Deputy for Food Logistics at the Coordinating Ministry for Food of the Republic of Indonesia, Ridky Irfan Wirautama, stated that the agriculture and food sector is one of the government's priorities. However, food security faces multidimensional challenges, ranging from climate change, global economic dynamics, food price volatility, natural disasters, and logistics infrastructure readiness, to the shrinking of productive land.

"Amidst these various challenges, innovation stands out as one of the key solutions. The transformation of waste management, including waste-to-energy conversion, demonstrates how environmental issues can be transformed into sources of economic value as well as part of the energy solution," said Ridky.

The government also continues to expand the implementation of the food circular economy and mitigate the impacts of extreme climate phenomena. In the aspect of maritime logistics, the development of green and smart ports is being promoted by combining digitalization, modern management, the ASRI culture (Aman, Sehat, Resik, and Indah / Safe, Healthy, Clean, and Beautiful), and the 3R principles (reduce, reuse, recycle).

The development of the blue economy also serves as a pillar for strengthening food security while unlocking new sources of economic growth in coastal areas through the fulfillment of protein-rich food needs, job creation, and investment opportunities.

"In 2026, the Red and White Fishermen Village (Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih - KNMP) is designated as one of the new economic growth centers in coastal areas, integrating the value chain from upstream to downstream—ranging from capture production, processing, cold storage and preservation facilities, to market distribution networks," said Ridky.

Ridky emphasized that strengthening food security requires cross-sector collaboration and policy alignment to ensure that food commodity supply chains and logistics run effectively and reach all regions of Indonesia.

"Through collaboration and the alignment of cross-sector food policy directions, we can ensure smooth operations while strengthening the supply chain and logistics of food commodities to reach every corner of Indonesia," concluded Ridky.
